Submitted by tiburonvolador, who says: An imaginary interpretation of of what a fully fledged underground rapid transit system and rail map would look like in Bogotá, Colombia. I designed the map with heavy influence from the London Underground. The system has 9 lines named after events, places and famous people. I designed it as an experiment in art in design for a city that needed a cathartic respite from a daily life of stress and […]

Fantasy Map: MBTA Rapid Transit – Past, Present and Proposed by Amy Parker/Fore Design

I’m quite taken by this interesting vision of Boston in an alternative future – one where the elevated rapid transit lines were never torn down, but instead upgraded to be part of a comprehensive and dense transit system. As well as these old lines (and the Watertown “A” branch of the Green line and the full length of the “E” branch!), Amy also adds in other proposed additions to the network like the Green Line […]

An illustration commissioned by Empire magazine to outline the movement of characters in the film adaptations of Tolkien’s Middle-Earth sagas. Certainly not the first transit map-styled representation of Middle-Earth I’ve seen, but definitely one of the most information-rich and attractive, even if the route lines don’t always completely gel with the isometric background.  Also, Christian’s rendition of Smaug is nothing short of magnificent. 4 stars! Check out a larger version of the map over on […]

Submitted by Julian, who says: In the post-interurban era of Los Angeles, various proposals for a reinstatement of rail service surfaced from time to time in the political discourse. Starting in the early 60s, the plans often sought to replicate the model of the Bay Area Rapid Transit or Atlanta’s MARTA heavy rail systems. By the late 70s, the foremost proponents and planners of such a system were the then-dominant Southern California Rapid Transit District […]

Submitted by Tyler, who says: I found out that back in 1959, there was a proposed Subway system for Winnipeg, but it got scrapped in favor of busses. Most maps that exist of the routes are low-res or not very detailed, so I made one (One such map here – Cameron). I used nonconventional colours, and utilized patterns to help people with colour vision deficiencies read it. Any feedback is welcome. Transit Maps says: Overall, […]

Submitted by Sam, who says: After a year and a bit of following this blog I’ve finally decided to make my own map! As you may know, the city of Christchurch, NZ is currently going through a massive rebuilding effort following the quakes of 2010 and 2011. There are constant conversations around what to do with the future of the city’s transport network, with talks of trains appearing here and there in media (and most […]

Fantasy Map: Major Rivers of the United States by Theodore Rindos

The early history of the United States is filled with explorers and pioneers making use of rivers as “rapid transit” to quickly travel through otherwise inhospitable or unknown lands. So it makes sense that someone would attempt to show this network in the simplified form of a subway map, and here is one such example by Theo Rindos. Of course, such a map instantly puts me in mind of Daniel Huffman’s superb series of river/subway maps, […]

Fantasy Map: Roman Roads in 125AD as a Subway Map by Sasha Trubetskoy

Here’s a map that’s right up my alley (I actually really wish I’d thought of doing it myself!) – a superb visualization of the major Roman roads of the second century AD. The legendary straightness of Roman roads makes them a great candidate for this style of diagram, and Sasha’s made it look very attractive, with a lovely colour palette and distinctive station dots. The very official-looking Roman Empire logos at the bottom left are […]

Submission – Fantasy Map: Vitória, Brazil (yes, another one!) by Vinicius

Hey Cameron. It was so interesting to stumble upon a fantasy map of Vitória, Brazil on Transit Maps. The story was very touching to me — just like Frederico, I also moved away from Vitória, and also made a fantasy map of its transit network as a way to connect back to a city I still care so much. My project was supposed to be more artistic than accurate in any way. I finished it […]

Submission – Fantasy Map: Harrisburg Area Rapid Transit by James Gibbons

Submitted by James, who says: This is a dream/concept I have for light rail transit in the Harrisburg, PA region. For a rather small metro area, there is pretty bad traffic, and oddly spaced suburban development of varying densities. I believe light rail transit in the region would spur more responsible developments and relieve traffic on both back roads and expressways, while encouraging walking. The system focuses on connecting suburban communities with the central core […]
