Photo taken by Aaron Robinson at Vancouver’s Metrotown station and shared with Transit Maps via Twitter. It’s not the first Star Wars themed adaptation of an official transit map I’ve seen (there’s also this one from Milan in 2015), but it’s executed nicely. I particularly like the “light saber” glow to the route lines. “VCC-3PO” adds a nice little bit of local flavour as well. The Star Wars-y font used does look a bit like […]

I’ve featured a lot of alternative London Underground maps on the site over the years, but this one has to be the most delightfully bonkers one yet and I love it. Each line on the map consists only of stations that share part of their name with each other: so there’s a line for all the stations which have “Park” in their name, for “North”, “South” and other directions and so on. Interchanges occur when […]

Submitted by Peter, who says: I love the aesthetic of this YouTube (only, so far) show and love the acting and the puppets and … pretty much everything about it and seriously hope they get some sort of deal for production. I didn’t think I could love it any more until this map popped up on a behind the scenes clip. I mean, the models of the subway and farm bus were amazing but a […]

Historical Fantasy Map: Proposed 1974 Detroit Rapid Transit System by Jake Berman

Jake Berman is one of those transit map design enthusiasts who are simply too prolific to note everything they do – suffice it to say that you should head over to his website and check out all the cool transit map things he makes. However, I do have to share this map – recreating a failed attempt at a south-east Michigan rail-based rapid transit system – if only because I think that Jake has absolutely […]

Submitted by Chris, who says: Here’s a map I’ve done that presents a vision for Wasatch Front rail transit in the year 2050. It’s done in the style of the London Underground map. Possible future lines are shown with dashes and are based on various proposals throughout the years. Some are very likely to be built fairly soon, while others are not. For instance, some parts of the Wasatch Line (my name) have been proposed, […]

Mash-up Map: TriMet MAX in the style of BART

Those TriMet designers are at it again! Just a week or so after their superb TriMet/WMATA mash-up comes this new map that reimagines Portland’s MAX light rail as the Bay Area’s BART. On first glance, it’s another near-perfect rendition of the source map and there’s a lot of neat touches. The reworking of TriMet’s logo to match BART’s famous lower-case “ba” logo is wonderful, and the accurate depiction of the Red Line’s corkscrew to get […]

Official Yet Unofficial Map: TriMet System Map in the Style of the Washington, DC Metro Map

OMG. I’m in hysterics over here. TriMet just posted a new system map — that they themselves made — that’s a note-perfect homage to the Washington, DC Metro system map. Just look at this work of art! It’s got thick route lines, tightly-set Helvetica, lush green parks, freeways and rivers. About the only thing missing are icons for the big tourist spots, like Powells Books or the Japanese Garden or Big Pink. Of course, TriMet […]

Submitted by Julian, who says: Although Los Angeles’ Pacific Electric interurban system fell victim to the postwar wave of urban railway closures, systems in other cities were preserved on account of their grade-separated infrastructure. In San Francisco in particular, the only streetcar lines that were preserved were the 5 that were segregated from traffic for part of their length. Since certain segments of the Pacific Electric system were not only segregated from traffic but 4-tracked […]

Submitted by Chris, who says: This is one of my latest works: an integrated rail diagram for the Baltimore and Washington DC areas. The style is inspired by Vignelli’s subway maps from the 70s. There are no intentional geographic references. I have tried to show all rail services – heavy, light rail and streetcar – in the same manner (all strokes are of the same thickness). Station indicators are different depending on service/transportation mode (circle = metro, subway, square = light […]

Submitted by Jason, who says: Gotham City Subway Map on the set of the new Joker movie filming at Bedford Park Blvd station. What are your thoughts on this? Transit Maps says: There’s plenty of other posts out there on the internet that talk about the innumerable easter eggs in this map – Kane County, Starlin Avenue, etc. – so I’m just going to talk about the map itself here. Previously, The Dark Knight Rises riffed […]
