Fantasy Maps

Submitted by Mark Field, who says: Like everyone on this site, I too have always been fascinated by transit maps, and have always wanted to make one but never had a reason. Recently I had opportunity to create one that actually serves a purpose. I work for an international relief and development agency, and our Canadian headquarters recently moved to a new office that had among other things, a bank of offices with glass frontage […]

Fantasy Maps, Mash-Up Maps

Photo taken by Aaron Robinson at Vancouver’s Metrotown station and shared with Transit Maps via Twitter. It’s not the first Star Wars themed adaptation of an official transit map I’ve seen (there’s also this one from Milan in 2015), but it’s executed nicely. I particularly like the “light saber” glow to the route lines. “VCC-3PO” adds a nice little bit of local flavour as well. The Star Wars-y font used does look a bit like […]

Unofficial Maps, Visualizations

Here’s an interesting little infographic (clearly based off the official Translink map) that’s making the rounds on Reddit/Twitter/etc. at the moment, showing average weekday ridership on rapid transit in Vancouver, British Columbia. Created by u/Mobius_Peverell on Reddit with “Excel, GIMP, and two afternoons” (in their own words), it’s quite a striking graphic. It definitely shows the dominance of the SkyTrain, and the Canada Line in particular. However, it’s important to note that the 99 B-Line, […]

Seen on Twitter, and requested by a few readers is this new map from the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) that shows both Toronto’s subway and streetcar networks. It’s a great concept, though perhaps overdue, so how does it stack up? Overall, it’s really rather good. The larger poster format finally frees the subway part of the map from the compressed confines of the narrow above-the-door strip map, though they will still exist alongside these new […]

Historical Maps

A map showing the extent of the streetcar network in Montreal in 1893. Most of the lines at this time were horse-drawn, though electrification of the system had already begun. “The Rocket”, Montreal’s first electric streetcar, made its maiden journey in September 1892, and all lines were electrified by 1894. Unofficial Maps

Submitted by zjfishy, who says: After my frustration with the new Metro and AMT maps for Montreal, I decided to make my own including both. I took some of the key features from the Metro map (like the dark background and chunky lines), but put a more modern and cleaner twist on it.  Room for edits once the REM and Blue line extension open, as well as the possible Magenta line, were considered and made for […]

Submission – Official Map: Montreal Commuter Rail Map, 2018

Submitted by Ruofan, who says: Montreal’s transit agency recently redesigned its commuter rail map, and I think it looks awful compared to the old one! They’ve added so much clutter, by indicating literally every commuter bus line in the city (and even illustrating which segments of the lines run on bus lanes) and using thick, colourful lines for the metro. The downtown segment is almost unreadable! Transit Maps says: Yeah, I have to agree with […]

Future Map: Cascadia High-Speed Rail Network by Oran Viriyincy

Future Maps

Created on behalf of a new advocacy group for true high-speed rail in the Pacific Northwest – the aptly named CascadiaRail – this is probably my favourite map of 2018 so far. It’s clear, beautiful, representative of the region, and is wonderfully aspirational – presenting a clear and exciting vision of a possible future. I especially like that there’s no state or national borders shown at all: the region is instead defined by the natural […]

Fantasy Maps

Submitted by Tyler, who says: I found out that back in 1959, there was a proposed Subway system for Winnipeg, but it got scrapped in favor of busses. Most maps that exist of the routes are low-res or not very detailed, so I made one (One such map here – Cameron). I used nonconventional colours, and utilized patterns to help people with colour vision deficiencies read it. Any feedback is welcome. Transit Maps says: Overall, […]

Submission – Official Map: WEGO Bus Map, Niagara Falls, Canada

Submitted by Lucas, who says: This is the official map of Canadian Niagara Falls’s WEGO Bus service. I personally like the way the falls are depicted and the river’s sharp 90 degree turn in the lower right hand corner of the map, which I think serves as a nice visual hook. I don’t really like the way the Orange Line is treated, as it is unclear where exactly it runs and terminates once it merges […]
