Submission – Official Map: Bus Map of Belluno, Italy, 2020

Submitted by Luca, who says: This is the official transit map of Belluno, Italy, made by the provider of the service, Dolomitibus. It represents the 8 bus lines operating in Belluno, each with its own color: A=Orange (Arancio), B=Blue, C=Light Blue (Celeste), etc… It’s extremely schematic, as it’s far from the real paths buses follow. For example, the Blue and the Green lines are, in the upper half of the map, represented as adjacent lines, […]

Official Map: Biotrén Commuter Rail, Concepción, Chile, 2018

Suggested by Ricardo Tróstel on Twitter. This is an example of a map that should be pretty simple and straightforward, but the designers have made a lot of baffling decisions along the way that work really hard to sabotage it from the inside. For starters, the Biotrén network has two lines, but the map doesn’t indicate where either begins or ends. For the record, Line 1 runs from Mercado to Hualqui and Line 2 runs […]

Submitted by okamijishi, who says: This is the official network map of Bogota’s Transmilenio, I wanted to know what do you think about it. I think this one is useless, we don’t use it a lot because it doesn’t show the routes. Transit Maps says: This is an interesting one. While the map is executed quite nicely with bold lines and clear labels, it is – as okamijishi says – almost entirely useless for actually navigating […]

Submitted by Ruofan, who says: Montreal’s transit agency recently redesigned its commuter rail map, and I think it looks awful compared to the old one! They’ve added so much clutter, by indicating literally every commuter bus line in the city (and even illustrating which segments of the lines run on bus lanes) and using thick, colourful lines for the metro. The downtown segment is almost unreadable! Transit Maps says: Yeah, I have to agree with […]

Submitted by Dan Reed, who says: Tysons Corner, Virginia is the archetypal suburban edge city and as traffic becomes unbearable, officials are hustling to get people on transit, particularly the new Silver Line with four local stops. The owners of Tysons Corner Center, one of the nation’s biggest malls and a tourist attraction in its own right, seem to have made this “spider map” showing all of the bus and rail service to and from […]

Submitted by Jim, who says: I came across this horrendous mess of lines and angles. Its the Weekday Service map for Belgian Rail – the national rail company for Belgium. Sorry its only in French/Dutch, but I think the drawing speaks for itself. I know making a map for a whole country is no easy feat but I feel like there must be some improvements to be made, especially around Brussels. Transit Maps says: Yep, that’s […]

Official Map – Melbourne and Regional Victoria Night Network Map, Australia, 2015

Sent my way by Nick Stylianou, here’s a map out of Melbourne, Victoria designed to support a major revamp of weekend night time transit in and around that city. For me, this piece continues a worrying recent trend of night service maps that have poor contrast and legibility, simply for the sake of pushing a dark “night” colour theme. This one even has freakin’ stars in the background, which is starting to verge on the ridiculous.  […]

Submitted by Line Gustafsson, who calls this “Luxembourg City’s spaghetti monster”, and says: I hate it, the layering of lines is seemingly arbitrary. The bad network design is worsened by choosing very broad lines and thus creating the body of the monster in the centre of the map. Transit Maps says: It’s hard to disagree with Line’s nickname for this map, or his frank assessment of it. This is a bit of a mess, especially in […]

Submitted by Miles Taylor, who says:  Here’s a pretty awful map I found of the MWRTA bus system in Framingham, MA. I can’t make heads or tails of these crazy routes. Transit Maps says: Yeah… this is pretty bad. It’s pretty much anyone’s guess as to what’s going on at the northwestern end of the red Route 7, as it looks like the bus just loops around aimlessly until it finds a way back east. […]

Southeastern’s website contains the following blurb: “Our network covers London, Kent and parts of East Sussex. With 179 stations and over 1000 miles of track, we operate one of the busiest networks in the country. We also run the UK’s only high speed trains.” They should really add: “We also have a network map that makes it almost impossible to work out where our trains actually go.” I mean, what is actually going on here? […]
