Fantasy Map: History of the Toronto Maple Leafs

Fantasy Maps, Mash-Up Maps

Submitted by just about the entire population of Toronto, I think. Created by Spacing’s Matthew Blackett in a collaboration with designer Jamie Hodgson, this subway-style map attempts to present a brief history of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team. Now, as an Australian, I’ll fully admit that my knowledge of ice hockey is a little thin, and I know even less about the Maple Leafs franchise. For me, ice hockey is that one question hiding […]

Historical Maps

Here’s another beautiful vintage transit map, this time from Winnipeg, Canada. It’s around the same age as this great map from Portland, Oregon, and displays a similarly austere wartime aesthetic. The map is printed in just three colours (black, red and green) and – apart from some of the typography in the legend –  is entirely hand-drawn and lettered. Important buildings and points of interest are all carefully and charmingly rendered, but the real winners […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted and created by faiscequetupeux, who says: A subway-style map of my city’s bus network. I’ve been making maps like this for 5 years now, this is the most detailed I’ve gotten. The official system map is here. I have plans to add downtown-level insets showing how the routes run near the two main terminals, and possibly layouts of each of the minor terminals as well, but that will come later. Transit Maps says: A […]

Sent my way by Twitter user @andrewsalzberg, here’s another board game based on a transit system – this time, Montreal’s Metro! (Readers may remember this post about “The London Game”, a board game based on the London Underground.) Looks like a pretty simple “race” game, but it captures the aesthetics of the actual map quite nicely. Source: Openalex website – link no longer active

Mash-Up Maps, Popular Culture

So every man and his dog is sending me links to the new Toronto TTC/Mario World mash-up map by Dave Delisle (prints for sale here). It’s definitely well executed, but I couldn’t help but think I’d seen something similar before… A couple of minutes of Googling later: a similarly-themed (although aesthetically a little different) map of the Boston MBTA done last year by Adam Summerville (prints here). I’d just like to make it clear that […]

Advertising

Matt Johnson sends these photos of great ads that use a subway map theme that he saw in the Montreal Metro on a recent trip. The interesting thing here is that these aren’t created by an ad agency riffing off the subway map theme, but are produced by the transit agency (the Société de transport de Montréal or STM) themselves, as informational ads regarding public transport and upcoming popular events. The ads have a nice […]

This map was nominated by Tumblr user Tevi as the worst transit map ever. While I don’t agree, as the map is at least competently drawn, it does have some serious shortcomings, not the least of which is knowing how much detail is too much. Have we been there? No. What we like: The blue background behind the map is a refreshing change from white or neutral grey, and the north pointer is quite lovely […]
