Submission: Pixies/Throwing Muses Subway Map by Brian

Submitted by Brian, who says: A few years back I made a quick sketch for my friend showing the relationships between Pixies and Throwing Muses and their associated bands. For her recent birthday I made this subway map version for her, because, of course I did. Who doesn’t want a subway map for their birthday? Transit Maps says: Any resemblance to my mid-1990s CD collection is entirely coincidental, I assure you! I like this, Brian […]

Historical Unofficial Map: New York Subway Diagram by Synthez Design Company, 1988

Has New York ever been so wide? This intriguing diagram from the New York Transit Museum’s collection makes the most of its landscape dimensions (possibly two pages in a guide book?) by going sideways as much as possible. Manhattan is impossibly broad, and the Bronx is shown as almost entirely to the east of it. Similar distortions happen just about everywhere, and yet – perhaps a little surprisingly – I still find the overall effect […]

My Transit Maps, Visualizations

Earlier this year, I was commissioned to create a series of trade route maps for Wallenius Wilhelmsen Ocean, a leading global provider of deep-sea ocean transportation for cars, trucks, rolling equipment and breakbulk cargo. The client had already developed some rough “subway map” visualizations for their network, noting that their current geographical maps of longer routes compressed many ports into very small areas while leaving vast swathes of empty ocean taking up the majority of […]

Submitted by Henry, who says: I stumbled upon this diagram of MTA services available from the MTA. While the general positioning of the lines looks like it’s very clean and has very good bones, the small design decisions (like the shape of transfer points to subway and commuter rail, the rail tickmarks, etc.) make this map feel very cheap and tacky. Transit Maps says: I’m not really feeling this map at all, Henry… not the […]

Submitted by the author, who says: Not a transit map, but a cave map inspired by Harry Beck I made a few years ago. Transit Maps says: This is fun! This map wears its influence very much on its sleeve, with much of the Tube Map’s celebrated visual language lifted directly from the source, but this is still very nicely put together. The one obvious difference is the substitution of what looks like Avant Garde […]

A wall-sized New York Subway map! Despite initial appearances, this is not based off the Vignelli map; rather, it appears to be a slightly modified or newer version of this map from Wikipedia. Anyone know an exact location for this? Update: New information and a link to a story on Gothamist about this building, which is completely subway themed! The building is at 132A Stanhope Street in Brooklyn if you want to find it yourself. […]

Submitted by nerdwiththehat, who says: Any thoughts on the MBTA map from The Simpsons’ Boston lambast bash last night? Looks like the new design. Transit Maps says: It sure does, although it has a cunningly crafted square “T” logo to prevent confusion with the real thing. The background water layer has also been deleted, probably to make the route lines stand out a little more obviously. Curiously, it’s labelled as a “bus routes map”, but overall, this is […]

Via: hyperrealcartography: New York City IND Subway planning map from 1927. I don’t have any information about this map other than what’s on it but it appears to be an early version of the Independent Subway System which was built by the City of New York to force the existing private subway companies to sell their lines to the city (”recaptured” as is labeled on the key) .  The plan clearly shows the first section […]

May the Fourth be with you, and all that. Of course there’s a Star Wars-related subway map out there. This map was created by Invasione Creativa, an advertising agency in Milan, as guerrilla marketing for Disney last year. It’s a pretty simple concept, basically replacing stations in the official Milan Metro map (March 2012, 3.5 stars) with planets from that galaxy far, far away. Jakku takes centre stage, replacing Milan’s Garibaldi FS station. (As a side […]
