I have to say that I’m not a huge fan of these in-car maps from my town of Portland. While they serve a purpose and fit in a very awkward vertical space, they’re neither elegant or match the design of the full light rail map. I particularly dislike the station symbol, which makes every stop — regardless of importance — look like an interchange station. Source: localmn/Flickr

Historical Maps

It’s been a while since Transit Maps featured an historical map, so here’s one from my city of Portland, Oregon. This charming map was produced by the Portland Traction Company in 1943: check out their nifty monogram in the photo set. While it’s labelled as a “trolley map” of Portland, it actually marks a point in time where streetcars and trolley buses were being replaced with cheaper to operate buses, and transit as a whole […]

Fantasy Maps

Nicely done fantasy map showing the route of the famous Oregon Trail. Very much in the style of H.C. Beck’s famous London Underground diagram, but with some lovely humorous touches. Have we been there? Kind of. Living in Oregon means I’ve driven or hiked along long stretches of the old trail. Wish I could catch the train there, though. What we like: Lovely homage to the original source, fantastic sense of humour – “hire Indian […]

Historical Maps, My Transit Maps, Visualizations

Somewhat related to my previous post, here’s a new transit map of Portland for your perusal. This piece was born out of two things – a friendly after-work chat with the immensely talented Ryan Sullivan of Paste In Place, where we discussed a concept similar to this; and a chance discovery of a high-resolution scan of a 1943 streetcar/trolley map on the amazing Vintage Oregon site. Based on that map, and information gleaned from too […]

My Transit Maps, Unofficial Maps

Here’s a new transit diagram that I’ve been working on for a while now – a unified rail transit map for the place I live, Portland, Oregon. Portland is blessed with fantastic public transportation, but I’ve always felt that the official TriMet system diagram fails to fully show this, even after its recent redesign. The official diagram only shows TriMet’s services – the MAX light rail and WES commuter rail – relegating the important Portland […]
