Historical Map: Suburban Rail Map of Adelaide, South Australia, 1985

A solid mid-1980s map of Adelaide’s surprisingly extensive suburban rail network – though there’s less branch lines than seen on this 1978 map, and many of the ones shown here would disappear in the next few years, no longer seen as profitable. The fact that all rail services are numbered allows short-turn and branch services to be easily discerned – on the green line, the 82 goes from Adelaide Station to Belair, while the 83 […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Jens, who says: Made a map of the public transport network in Gothenburg, Sweden. The official one (August 2018, 3 stars) just doesn’t look very good I think. Transit Maps says: This is a lovely effort, Jens – the map certainly seems to relate the tram line routes to the real world far better than the official map, which is stretched vertically quite a lot (to fit a required space?). The typography is […]

Submitted by Alexey, who says: Hi! I am currently developing a metro scheme for Bucharest, and I would like to hear your comments on this. The tram and bus lines to the airport are also marked on the map, they will be displayed only on the poster version. Transit Maps says: This is a handsome diagram, distilling the Bucharest Metro down to its base elements only. In reality, the yellow M1 is nowhere near circular, […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Bernie, who says: It’s been a while! I’m wondering whether you would be interested in taking a look at a diagram I have completed recently, showing all railway lines (except local or in-park people movers, such as the Disneyland monorail) around the Tokyo conurbation. I welcome any and all feedback! Transit Maps says: What an undertaking, Bernie! Mapping Tokyo’s subway lines alone is a huge challenge, let alone every darn rail in the […]

This is an advertisement produced by Gothenburg’s Västtrafik transit agency (see their press release here, in Swedish). The tag line translates to “Electrically powered since 1902”, with the image showing Gothenburg’s tram network in the form of an electrical circuit board. In their own words, the ad “reminds [us] that climate-smart electric vehicles are old news.” The map is a very close facsimile of the official tram/ferry map (August 2018, 3 stars), though with the […]

Historical Maps

A lovely little map of central Adelaide from a 1917 pamphlet issued by the South Australian “Intelligence and Tourist Bureau”, clearly showing the lines of the then-extensive electric tram network. Full conversion from horse trams to electric had only been completed a few years prior in 1914. Oddly enough, the only remaining tram route in Adelaide – the line out to Glenelg – is shown here as a steam railway starting at the corner of […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Kenneth, who says: Hi Cameron, Well, I finally went and made a map after all the years berating other maps. So I throw it to you for amusement/ridicule, etc. I’m deliberately not going to explain my design decisions in detail because I think it best to get feedback without colouring your judgement. I’ll be writing a blog on my thinking in the next week or two but I wanted to simplify and de-clutter […]

Future Maps, Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Durfsurn, who says: Originally I was making a map similar to my previous style of Melbourne/ Australian transport maps, but as the increasing complexity of a multi-modal map made itself clear I decided to streamline the lines, trying to balance real life corridors with more sensible and understandable map design. First I was inspired from a recent trip to Japan (amazing PT systems with manic maps to go with!) and added Line Identifiers […]

Submitted by Kristofer, who says: This is the new official map for the Östgötatrafiken network in Norrköping. Line 2 and 3 is tram, the rest is bus. I like the overall design of the map, but think it is very hard to read the stop names, because of the very thin font on dark background. Also it is a little strange to denote the lines as unidirectional in the legend (e.g., Line 2 From: Fridvalla […]

Submitted by my dad (and you wonder where I get my love of maps from?), who says: You may be interested in the new Paris bus map, showing major changes to be implemented in April. Transit Maps says: Thanks, dad! This is certainly an interesting map, as it uses a lot of familiar elements from the Paris Metro map — the Parisine font family, the slightly muted/pastel colour palette and even the general stylised layout […]
