“Storylines”: the Literary London Tube Map by Anna Burles

Storylines London’s iconic tube map is transformed into a pit-stop journey through classic styles of storytelling, with the individual tube lines turned into genres and sub genres of literature. The depths of the Northern Line are made over into the aptly named Horror Line. The Bakerloo Line coursing past Sherlock Holmes’s Baker Street becomes, of course, the Crime & Mystery Line. And the pink trajectory of the Hammersmith & City is converted to the Romance […]

I know this just a quick in-house diagram to illustrate the proposed additions to the Delhi Metro system, but does it have to be so incomprehensible and ugly? Type is flying around at almost every possible angle, some lines are geographical, others are diagrammatic… I need a lie down. Source: tanoy_raj/Flickr

Brought to my attention by Garrett Smith when he submitted the abomination that is the new official UTA map, here’s a completely different take on Salt Lake City’s rail system from Flickr user H4vok_13. This map is by no means perfect, but it’s an absolute paragon of simplicity and clean design compared to the real thing. What we like: Streamlined, simplified route lines that expand the city centre and compress the outlying areas work wonders […]

Unofficial Map/Art: Moscow “Underround”

Definitely more a piece of art using the Moscow Metro as inspiration than an actual usable map, but still noteworthy. Taking the spoke and hub nature of the Metro completely literally, the work shows the stations along each line in the form of concentric rings: simple, but graphically effective. I have no doubt that a seasoned Muscovite Metro commuter would be able to locate the stations they use quite easily. Source: aircoooled karma/Flickr

Created by long-time Transit Maps follower, Zac Landis, this is exactly the sort of thing a transit nerd should do with a blank wall. Using just yarn and push-pins, Zac has recreated the Tokyo subway map in all its complexity. Looks great, and (only) took him 15 or so hours to do. Love it! Unofficial Map: Frequent Transport of Wellington, New Zealand by Brent Palmer

Submitted and created by Brent Palmer. This is one I conjured up this weekend, dealing with Wellington, NZ. Only four local bus routes (and the Airport Flyer) turned out to meet any half-reasonable “frequent service” criteria. Transit Maps says: A gorgeous looking map from long-time follower, Brent Palmer, that unfortunately serves to highlight the paucity of frequent transit services in New Zealand’s capital. Another striking dark background, and some unusual but highly effective colours for […]

Created by “jeflu”, who says: A better Caltrain map: Caltrain’s current route map looks outdated and provides very minimal transfer information. I’ve created a refreshed map which provides more comprehensive transfer info (to other transit systems and airports) as well as a one-way fare chart. Stations served by Baby Bullet express trains are in bold. A current drawback: I left out all weekend-only and south-of-San-Jose stops. Future renditions could include those. Transit Maps says: This […]

Submitted and created by faiscequetupeux, who says: A subway-style map of my city’s bus network. I’ve been making maps like this for 5 years now, this is the most detailed I’ve gotten. The official system map is here. I have plans to add downtown-level insets showing how the routes run near the two main terminals, and possibly layouts of each of the minor terminals as well, but that will come later. Transit Maps says: A […]

Unofficial Map: New York Regional Rail by Jake Berman, 2010

Unofficial Maps

Directly related to the last post, here’s another map of greater New York’s regional rail. Designed by Jake Berman in 2010, this map takes a completely different approach to Carter’s work. It uses colour-coding to differentiate between agencies, rather than routes, and shows services as main lines and branches, rather than showing each and every route along their entire length. This makes for a simpler-looking, more compact map, although it means that the map doesn’t […]

To say I’m excited to share this map with you would be an understatement. In August, I was contacted by Carter Green, a high school student who had been inspired by my maps (especially my map of French TGV routes) and had created his own of regional rail services in and around New York City. He asked whether I would mind taking a look at it, which I did. Immediately, I was impressed with the […]
