The new map of Izmir rapid transit I designed has been adopted as official one.

Transit Maps says:

Congratulations on this lovely little diagram becoming “official,” Evgeny!

There’s a lot to like about it, especially the intelligent use of a 30-degree grid to match the real-world geography of İzmir nicely, which also helps in setting all the labels horizontally without them running into each other. I also really like the subtle outline for the under-construction M2 metro line, which also shows that the diagram is future-proofed.

The diagram has to deal with two different scales: a relatively-compact urban area served by the Metro, trams and ferries, and the İZBAN suburban lines heading a long way north and south. Evgeny has dealt with this quite deftly, with the suburban lines outside the main area just being compressed substantially, with a minimum of space between the stations: I think this works quite well.

I also really like the curved route lines for the ferries, which I almost always think looks better than trying to force the rigid angles of standard transit diagram design on them. Ferries are in the water, so a more fluid design approach suits them best. I do think that perhaps the very thin lines for the “irregular” ferries are bordering on failing contrast and accessibility guidelines, though. However, Evgeny has done great work tweaking his colours to get them to work for color-blind users, which is fantastic.

About my only other comment is that English-speaking users of the diagram might need an explanation that the walking distances are given in minutes to walk between the points, as the “dk” abbreviation for “dakika” (minute) might not be immediately obvious to them.

Our final word: Modern and stylish, with some intelligent design decisions underpinning the whole diagram. Great work!
