I’m somewhat in awe of this project by Nicolas Kruchten, which shows full-length panoramic views of all the Angrignon-bound platforms on the Montreal Metro’s Green Line. To achieve the end result, Nicolas took video from the last window of a train as it departed each station, and then wrote software that stitched frames together into the final panorama, taking into account the train’s acceleration out of each station. Frankly their route map is a far better effort than Stagecoaches! Brilliantly, their small buses are called Whippet Puppy, and when out of service their matrix displays say “Woof!” which is just fantastic. Here’s a rare example of an illustrated strip map, used above the doors on the Gold Coast’s G:Link light rail vehicles in Australia. Despite my self-professed preference for clean, minimalist, ordered design, I actually love this map to bits. Why? Because “sense of place” and community are the absolute winners here. Look what I just found while going through some dusty old boxes! Although this crafty map of the MBTA rapid transit system is very obviously home-made, it has some clever ideas for helping visually impaired riders. Each route line is constructed with different materials, each with their own texture, which enables quick identification of lines by touch.
