Submission – Great Britain National Rail Route Diagram by Andrew Smithers

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Andrew, who says: This latest version of the diagram now features correct geographic orientation at junctions. The previous maps were nodal (major stations were shown as hubs where trains can arrive and depart in any direction, sometimes reversing) to keep straight line trajectories as long as possible. See the Southampton example for then and now. The map is now more curvy with a softer less angular appearance which I believe users will prefer. […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Jens, who says: Made a map of the public transport network in Gothenburg, Sweden. The official one (August 2018, 3 stars) just doesn’t look very good I think. Transit Maps says: This is a lovely effort, Jens – the map certainly seems to relate the tram line routes to the real world far better than the official map, which is stretched vertically quite a lot (to fit a required space?). The typography is […]

Submitted by Luca, who says: This is the official transit map of Belluno, Italy, made by the provider of the service, Dolomitibus. It represents the 8 bus lines operating in Belluno, each with its own color: A=Orange (Arancio), B=Blue, C=Light Blue (Celeste), etc… It’s extremely schematic, as it’s far from the real paths buses follow. For example, the Blue and the Green lines are, in the upper half of the map, represented as adjacent lines, […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Joseph, who says: I recently completed an unofficial map of Roaring Fork Transportation Authority winter bus service in Aspen, Colorado (80 x 40 cm, Affinity Designer). I decided to take on this project in response to the official maps’ collective failure to portray the system’s Upvalley services. RFTA’s system map lacks detail south of Brush Creek and directs the viewer to a nonexistent “Aspen inset,” and the City of Aspen’s bus map shows […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Fern, who says: A few weeks ago, i made a fairly rough strip map of almost all Bay Area passenger rail services using some pens and graph paper. I was wondering if you’d like to review it? Transit Maps says: A nice effort at a Bay Area-wide topological diagram, Fern! It certainly fits into the long, narrow proportions of your average strip map nicely. I particularly like the use of a “half-grid” for […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Memphis, who says: This is a redesign project of the Taipei Metro Map with aims to enhance the legibility. I first tried to make something like this three years ago, when I was a college student. Back then, to pursue an excellent looking, I gave up a lot of detailed information and lower the font size, the result looks cool but yet not practical (the older version). After three years, I think it’s […]

Submitted by Tomasz, who says: Here’s the official Koleje Dolnośląskie (Lower Silesia, PL) scheme with regional railway lines. Transit Maps says: A solid, workmanlike diagram of regional rail in the region around Wrocław, Poland. Nice thick, colourful route lines with good indication of stopping patterns for the various services. The legend is comprehensive and neatly organised at the bottom of the map. The labelling is a little inconsistent, with lots of different angles and even […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Alexey, who says: Hi! I am currently developing a metro scheme for Bucharest, and I would like to hear your comments on this. The tram and bus lines to the airport are also marked on the map, they will be displayed only on the poster version. Transit Maps says: This is a handsome diagram, distilling the Bucharest Metro down to its base elements only. In reality, the yellow M1 is nowhere near circular, […]

Submitted by Neil Connolly, who says: This is a map of the local train network of Ortenau (the German county next to Strasbourg in France) as it appears on the train itself. As you can see, it runs trains into France too. While I very much appreciate the network (access to the Black Forest, Offenburg, etc., from France, where I live) the map has always annoyed me, but I can’t figure out exactly why. What […]

Submission – Historical Map: Victorian Passenger Rail Network, 1928 by Philip Mallis

Historical Maps

Submitted by Philip, who says: I’ve designed this schematic map of what Victoria’s passenger rail network looked like in 1928. It was absolutely huge, with 114 lines and 1,185 stations. The map is built around the seven main lines (thicker 15pt lines) with branch and other lines thinning out (10pt) to create a basic visual heirarchy. This emphasises services rather than infrastructure, as it also shows where passengers were required to interchange. Line groups are […]
