A compelling proposal to enhance the representation of “New York’s second subway” – the PATH to New Jersey – on the official MTA subway map. PATH carries over 70 million passengers each year, runs 24 hours a day and even accepts pay-per-ride MTA MetroCards as fare payment, but is relegated to the official map’s subsidiary “commuter/passenger rail track” graphical style, while the New Jersey shoreline itself is completely absent (the Hudson River instead looks particularly […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Guy Delco, who says: I’m in Boston regularly for business, and find myself on the T often.  Downloaded the EmbarkBOS app.  It has a particularly good rendering of the MBTA system. I particularly like the way they capture the several commuter rail lines out of South and North Stations in varying shades of purple.  You’ve probably seen it, but if not, here’s an image screen-capped from my phone.  Transit Maps says: Actually, I […]

xoverit: I came across these EPs by Australian indie folk musician Amanda Merdzan and instantly recognized the Washington, DC Metro. http://noisetrade.com/amandamerdzan/the-map-has-been-redrawn http://www.last.fm/music/Amanda+Merdzan/The+Map+Has+Been+Redrawn Well, almost. I’m not quite sure where the Yellow Line is heading off to at the top… maybe that’s the “redrawn” part of the map?

The opening of Metrovalencia’s new Line 9 in March 2015 led to both a restructuring of the previous network (renumbering and rerouting of some lines) and this new system map.  This version differs from previous ones in that it differentiates between “metro” and “tram” services – using a solid line with white station dots for the former, and an two-toned line with coloured station dots for the latter. I’m not entirely sure the differentiation needs to be […]

The NY Subway Map with Background Colours Adjusted to Match the Vignelli Diagram, by Shawn Sprockett

Mash-Up Maps, Unofficial Maps

I saw the animated GIF above on Twitter yesterday, and Shawn was kind enough to share the whole map with me, so I present it here. As Shawn himself says: I took Vignelli’s color contrast + existing map’s geographic accuracy = the subway map of my dreams. … cheekily addressing the MTA’s Twitter account and asking them to “please fix.” Shawn’s revision definitely allows the subway lines (without doubt, the most important element of the map) […]

Fantasy Maps

Not the first Louisville fantasy map that I’ve featured – see Peter Dovak’s map here (March 2013) – but this one takes quite a different approach. It’s certainly grander in scale than Peter’s modest two-line system. I will say that I adore the colour palette of this map: the muted background, river and parklands are lovely, and work nicely with the route line colours, which are also a little knocked back from the normal solid […]

Submitted by scnartup, who says: Similar stuff to the video of a day in the life of London’s Underground in Budapest. Metro line M4 is not shown since it opened in 2014 and the video was made in 2012. One dot represents one vehicle [as opposed to the London video, where 1 dot represents a single rider – CAM]. Legend: white dot: night bus blue dot: bus red dot: trolley bus yellow dot: tram bigger dots: metro […]
