GIF: Evolution of a New Unofficial Santiago Transit Map by Jose Ureña

Unofficial Maps

Jose sent me a link to this still-evolving project via Twitter the other day, and his post on Medium about it is well worth reading, even through the filter of Google Translate. He’s got a lot of great ideas, and it’s always fun seeing how other people approach codifying their design principles for a map. What really caught my eye was this GIF showing the evolution of Jose’s map, all the way from the initial […]

New Project/Work-in-Progress – Historical Map: Streetcar Lines of Portland, Oregon, 1920

Historical Maps, My Transit Maps

Despite Portland once having one of the largest streetcar networks in the United States, finding reliable, empirical information about it is surprisingly difficult. Books about the history of the streetcar – like Richard Thompson’s series of books or John Labbe’s Fares Please! – tend to be more photographs and captions than exhaustive detail, internet sources are incomplete and at times contradictory, and even contemporaneous sources are frustratingly incorrect. A much-referenced Pittmon map of streetcar lines […]

Via: parismetromap: The New Paris Metro Map is developing. The final version will be soon… within one to two months. An RATP logo for the blog this originated from, but surely this is not a reworking of the actual official Métro map? Anyone have any more details on this at all? The idea of making a circle out of Lines 2 and 6 is interesting, but the spaghetti-like tangle of routes contained within that circle […]

Work in Progress: Time-scaled Hong Kong MTR Diagram by Ryan Carpenter

Unofficial Maps, Visualizations

Submitted by Ryan, who says: I’ve been working on a variation of a time-scaled transit map (more of a diagram, given there’s no geographic context).  I’m not quite sure how to handle the transfer stations.  I’d like to make it clear how long passengers will spend in the stations (walking, waiting) vs. how long they will be on the trains.  I’d be interested in what you think. Transit Maps says: I really like the concept […]

Work in Progress: McKinney Avenue Trolley Map – Current Service

My Transit Maps, Unofficial Maps

This is pretty much the finished product, I think, barring any major errors. The MATA website states that there are 38 trolley stops along the route, but I can only find 37, even after multiple “drives” along the entire route in Google Street View.  I changed the background colour from silver to beige after doing some prints: the whole thing just looked too drab and grey once on paper. This works much better and make […]

My Transit Maps, Unofficial Maps

Thanks to Michael Champlin for inspiring this little project. I’ve been thinking of doing a more geographically-based map for a while now to break out of the routine of always doing diagrammatic transit maps, so when he sent me a link to the actual map (PDF, 5.6MB) that this heritage streetcar system in Dallas, Texas uses, I knew that something better could be done. So here’s a work-in-progress screenshot. Most of the hard work has […]

Work in Progress – Downtown Pittsburgh Neighbourhood Map

Lovely work here, with just enough dimensionality to make things interesting. The “3-D” landmark buildings are nice, but what I really like are the shadows underneath bridges and overpasses that visually lift them up higher than the underlying roads. Some nice insight into workflow, as well – the accuracy of ArcGIS combined with the visual punch some Illustrator work can bring. Via: mappingtwincities: Work in progress on neighborhood maps. This map is a part of lager […]

My Transit Maps

Some people have asked how I’m going on my new big project – a simplified map of all U.S. Highways and Interstates on the one map. Well, here’s where I’m at currently. Everything in the western half of the map is pretty much finished: the east coast needs to be revisited for consistency and there’s still a whole heap of work to do in the south east. I actually feel that I’ve left the hardest […]

Unofficial Future Map: Seattle East Link Light Rail (Segment A)

Unofficial Maps

Hey, I got to make a transit map for work! This base map will eventually show all the issues (and solutions) that my company has identified for this part of the corridor, but I can’t show you that part, just the map itself. These “issues maps” are usually created from GIS data overlaid on a low-quality aerial photo, so it’s definitely nice to break the mould and create something more visually compelling and stylish. I’m […]
