Submission – Official Map: Bus Routes of Trier, Germany, 2015

Submitted by Tobias, who says: Trier’s not a big town (100,000 population), but it’s Germany’s oldest. Therefore many tourists are coming to visit and see the Roman buildings and ruins. I don’t know if they use the bus for that. See the plan attached. Transit Maps says: If Trier is like many other German towns that I’ve visited (and a quick look at Google Maps seems to confirm that it is), then the tourist-frequented historical […]

A very obvious sticker hides a rather monumental error on this Bakerloo Line strip map. The rather ugly abbreviation “Junct” only just covers up the fact that this sign used to read “Willesden Green” – which is on the Jubilee Line, not the Bakerloo! Prior to 1979 and the opening of the Jubilee Line, Willesden Green was serviced by Bakerloo trains – but we can’t even blame an old sign here, as this one only dates from the […]

Submitted by Line Gustafsson, who calls this “Luxembourg City’s spaghetti monster”, and says: I hate it, the layering of lines is seemingly arbitrary. The bad network design is worsened by choosing very broad lines and thus creating the body of the monster in the centre of the map. Transit Maps says: It’s hard to disagree with Line’s nickname for this map, or his frank assessment of it. This is a bit of a mess, especially in […]

Submission – Future Map: Edmonton LRT Network by Dan Lazin

Submitted by Dan, who says: Hi! Just saw that you posted Edmonton’s long-term LRT network plan. That’s the engineering consultants’ version; I designed a nicer map on commission for the mayor’s office — with significantly more detail, based on the individual line plans — which you can see here. The city’s transportation site still uses the consultants’ version, but their advocacy site uses my redesign. (For some reason, though, they decided to crop the full […]

Submitted by everythings-shiny-captain, who says: I live in Calgary, so I’m familiar with Calgary Transit’s “Route Ahead” plan to expand light rail and bus rapid transit services. Out of curiosity I searched for Edmonton Transit’s plan and found this terrible map of their light rail development plan. What is going on?! Transit Maps says: At first I thought this was just yet another poorly drawn, generic “future corridors” map and was wondering what the fuss was about… […]

The opening of Metrovalencia’s new Line 9 in March 2015 led to both a restructuring of the previous network (renumbering and rerouting of some lines) and this new system map.  This version differs from previous ones in that it differentiates between “metro” and “tram” services – using a solid line with white station dots for the former, and an two-toned line with coloured station dots for the latter. I’m not entirely sure the differentiation needs to be […]

Fast forward ten years from yesterday’s excellent diagrammatic map of bus services in Iceland, and we’re now left with this sad thing. There are far fewer routes, although I’m not sure if that’s because service has been reduced or the map is only showing the routes of one company.  The geographically-accurate shape of Iceland sits uneasily with the crudely straightened route lines: this map has none of the elegance of the earlier version. On a […]

Submission – Future Map: Rapid Transit in Helsinki, 2020

Submitted by Mikko, who says: Helsinki Regional Transport Authority’s (HSL) draft map of rapid transit and trunk bus lines, published for comments on 16 February 2015. There are multiple errors and readability problems with this version, e.g. the commuter train designation letters are too small to be read, some Swedish-language names are wrong etc. Some notes: names of stations and stops are in Finnish and Swedish (officially bilingual country) the so-called Ring Rail Line (Kehärata) […]

Submission – A Heart-shaped Map for Helsinki’s New Airport Rail Loop

Submitted by Augustin, who says: A new ring rail line is soon to be opened in Helsinki, thus providing a convenient way to reach the airport from city centre (only bus services are available as of now). HSL, the local transportation authority, advertises this huge change with a lovely heart shaped map of the ring, conveniently showing all the stops the trains will potentially call at, although the actual stopping pattern on the line has […]
