Submission – Unofficial Map: Chongqing Rail Transit Map, China
Submitted by Rob and Roger. Rob has this to say: I’m seeing a lack of Asian transit systems, so heres a map of the Chongqing one in central China. I couldn’t find any official one, but I found this really nice one on Wikipedia, but it seems to be designed and made by 云淡风轻. Transit Maps says: This is a nice, simple, no-nonsense transit map that lays out the existing rail transit lines in Chongqing very […]
Yamanote Line Map from Florent Chavouet’s “Tokyo on Foot”
Via: comiccartography: Tokyo Wan/Contents Florent Chavouet Tokyo on Foot Lovely contents page illustration/map from Florent Chavouet’s book, Tokyo on Foot. The map is dominated by the circular Yamanote Line, with thick “train track” route lines and bright red stations. More than anything else on the page, this circle seems to define “Tokyo”. Quite lovely.
Submission – Official Map: Guangzhou Metro, Guangdong, China, 2015
Submitted by Tony, who says: I love this official transit map on Guangzhou metro, it’s simple and clean and has just enough detail to not confuse you. Only thing I hate is the interchange station symbol it looks big and bulky when compared to the rest of the map. Your thoughts? Transit Maps says: Yes, this is certainly a fine example of a clean, simple diagrammatic transit map. There’s nothing else at all to draw […]
Historical Map: Hong Kong MTR “Modified Initial System”, c. 1978
Here’s a fantastic old map of the first segment of Hong Kong’s now extensive rapid transit system. The original source dates the map to 1978, which seems reasonable to me – the route was well under construction at that time, with the segment from Kwun Tong to Shek Kip Mei opening in October 1979. The route was extended to Tim Sha Tsui in December of that year, and the initial section was completed in February […]
GIF – Expansion of the Shanghai Metro, 1994-2014
Wow. From nothing in 1993 to 14 lines, 338 stations and 548km (341 miles) of track – the longest rapid transit system by route length in the world – in 2015. A mere 8 million people use the system on an average weekday. Of interest is the massive expansion in the years leading up to the 2010 Shanghai Wold Expo. Work in Progress: Time-scaled Hong Kong MTR Diagram by Ryan Carpenter
Submitted by Ryan, who says: I’ve been working on a variation of a time-scaled transit map (more of a diagram, given there’s no geographic context). I’m not quite sure how to handle the transfer stations. I’d like to make it clear how long passengers will spend in the stations (walking, waiting) vs. how long they will be on the trains. I’d be interested in what you think. Transit Maps says: I really like the concept […]
Photo: Subway Map with Construction Gophers
Dating back to the construction of the Kaohsiung MRT back in 2005. The O5/R10 interchange is now the Formosa Boulevard station, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world. I’m not even going to pretend that I understand what the colour-coded gophers are for, but they sure are cute! Source: ailb/Flickr – link no longer active
Unofficial Map: Transportation Map of Burger King… I Mean Istanbul
Here’s how to ruin a fairly competent map of transit in Istanbul in one easy step… by my count, there are a staggering seventy-one Burger King logos dotted pretty much everywhere on this map like a bad case of the measles. And as this is a heavily stylised diagrammatic map, are the logos even of any use in locating said fast food restaurants? Source: losangeles1947/Flickr
Photo: Toyoko Line Strip Map, Shibuya Station, Tokyo
Lovely clarity with this strip map for the Toyoko Line in Japan (the name is a portmanteau of Tokyo and Yokohama, the two cities that the line runs between). There are four route lines, each clearly showing which stations the different service types stop at. From top to bottom, these are Local, Express, Commuter Express and Limited Express. Interchanges with other lines – regardless of operating company – are also shown, and it’s bilingual as […]
