Here’s one for @airlinemaps: a wonderful infographic/diagram mashup from the 1950s that packs in heaps of information, right down to the type of airplane used on each route (denoted by the colour of each line). Flight numbers, time of departure/arrival, days of service, through routing of flights… it’s all incorporated into the one graphic. And it’s trilingual as well! Compare with this very similar diagram of Polish Airlines LOT routes from 1939 (June 2015, 5 […]

Submitted by Bailey, who says: Here’s a map from of the Qingdao Metro for Line 3 – quite an interesting, stylistic one. For all the effort that went into the (quite brilliant) artwork, I’m surprised the station names are entirely unreadable near the city center. Transit Maps says: Despite the name, Line 3 is actually the first Metro line constructed in Qingdao, opening in two stages from 2015. In typical Chinese style, it’ll be joined […]

In the USA, new transit takes time. Whether it’s Environmental Impact Statements that take seven years to write, or tunnel boring machines that take longer than expected to do their work, or lawsuits from people angry that light rail might take away one of their beloved exit ramps, or mayors who want to rip up new streetcar tracks after they’ve been installed… the list goes on. China, however, is a completely different matter… as this […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Rob and Roger. Rob has this to say: I’m seeing a lack of Asian transit systems, so heres a map of the Chongqing one in central China. I couldn’t find any official one, but I found this really nice one on Wikipedia, but it seems to be designed and made by 云淡风轻.  Transit Maps says: This is a nice, simple, no-nonsense transit map that lays out the existing rail transit lines in Chongqing very […]

Submitted by Tony, who says: I love this official transit map on Guangzhou metro, it’s simple and clean and has just enough detail to not confuse you. Only thing I hate is the interchange station symbol it looks big and bulky when compared to the rest of the map. Your thoughts? Transit Maps says: Yes, this is certainly a fine example of a clean, simple diagrammatic transit map. There’s nothing else at all to draw […]

Historical Map: Hong Kong MTR “Modified Initial System”, c. 1978

Here’s a fantastic old map of the first segment of Hong Kong’s now extensive rapid transit system. The original source dates the map to 1978, which seems reasonable to me – the route was well under construction at that time, with the segment from Kwun Tong to Shek Kip Mei opening in October 1979. The route was extended to Tim Sha Tsui in December of that year, and the initial section was completed in February […]

Wow. From nothing in 1993 to 14 lines, 338 stations and 548km (341 miles) of track – the longest rapid transit system by route length in the world – in 2015. A mere 8 million people use the system on an average weekday. Of interest is the massive expansion in the years leading up to the 2010 Shanghai Wold Expo. Submitted by Xuan, who says: Hey Cameron, I am wondering if you’d be interested in reviewing this unofficial subway map of my hometown – Beijing. The author is Lyt, aka “lighthunter”. I think his version is 100,000 times better than the official map. I think he deserves an ovation. Although China now has the longest subway mileage in the world, most Chinese transit maps are hideous. That’s why I figure this map could be a […]

Future Official Map: Pearl River Delta Rapid Transit

Sent my way by David Edmondson of The Greater Marin, this is an incredibly large (the dimensions of the PDF are 145″ x 101″ or 386cm x 256cm!) and very comprehensive map of the planned Pearl River Delta Rapid Transit system. Currently under construction, the idea behind the system is to have every major urban area in the region to be less than an hour away from Guangzhou (the huge urban area in the blue […]
