Historical Maps

A small inset diagram from a 1993 tourist map of Tokyo, showing the myriad transportation options between Tokyo and its airports. Nicely simplified, and also gives prices, as well as approximate travel times to Narita (then still officially known as “New Tokyo International Airport”). The distinctive shape made by the Yamanote and Chuo lines (a device also seen in this wonderful 1984 diagram by Richard Saul Wurman) forms the backbone of the diagram.  Source: David Rumsey […]

My Transit Maps, Unofficial Maps

While preparing today’s post about the current Medellin Metro map (2 stars), I kept looking at the map and asking myself if there were ways that I could improve upon it. Eventually, I had enough ideas to make a reworking worthwhile and set about the task. I’ve chosen to show a “near-future” version of the system, with the “M” and “P” MetroCable lines completed, but without the Line 3 BRT, as I can’t find enough information on the […]

Submitted by David Osorio, who says: It shows Metro lines, BRT lines, Tramway and Aerial Cable Car lines. Transit Maps says: I last reviewed Medellin’s transit map back in 2014 (1.5 stars), but this new version is sufficiently different for me to re-evaluate it. The first things I notice are the route lines are much thicker and the labels are much bigger, changes which improve the map tremendously over the spindly previous version.  However, some […]

Official Maps

Submitted by Moritz, who says: I’m an architecture student from Zurich who has also been a (public) transport and map geek for quite some time now. The town of Plauen in Germany has had a quite horrible map for its tram and bus system, so I created a new one privately, which I then offered to them for use. They indeed agreed to pay for it (which they haven’t done yet, but I’ll be on […]

Historical Maps, Prints Available

An unusual perspective here – looking down the length of the mile-long diagonal parkway to the Philadelphia Museum of Art (and its famous steps), with bus and streetcar routes highlighted in a lovely shade of apple green. Does a lot of work with just two printed colours – a reminder that limited palettes can sometimes be just as effective as full-colour. Really quite lovely. Prints of this map are now available in the Transit Maps […]

Official Maps

Submitted by okamijishi, who says: This is the official network map of Bogota’s Transmilenio, I wanted to know what do you think about it. I think this one is useless, we don’t use it a lot because it doesn’t show the routes. Transit Maps says: This is an interesting one. While the map is executed quite nicely with bold lines and clear labels, it is – as okamijishi says – almost entirely useless for actually navigating […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Laura, who says: I have a love-hate relationship with Santiago’s Metro map. The current one excludes very useful information (particularly important for migrants and tourists) such as the existence of private buses to the Airport, or the commuter rail service to Nos (run by another company) that’s been working for more than a year now. It works just as well as the Metro using the same card and price, but for some reason […]

Future Maps, Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Julian, who says: I was compelled to redesign my town’s transit map after reading a comment on LA’s map during the World Cup that said a detracting feature was that it looked “empty.” I try to solve this problem by both bringing more balance to the arrangement of the lines and giving a sense of geographical context with regional borders. I tilted north 45 degrees to create the pleasing visual effect of the […]

Official Maps

Submitted by Maxwell Robb, who says I saw this map last year in Hoboken Station in NJ. I was rather shocked, I’ve never really seen a bus map quite like it. It appears that NJ Transit has made them for every county. I’m curious about your thoughts. Transit Maps says: I’ve seen these NJ Transit bus maps a few times over the years, and I’ve never really been impressed by them. For me, the colours […]
