Prints of this map are available in my online store, starting at just $38 plus shipping for a 24″ wide by 32″ print. Click here to get one! This map is an evolution of one […]

Project: Wallenius Wilhelmsen Ocean Trade Route Maps

My Transit Maps, Visualizations

Earlier this year, I was commissioned to create a series of trade route maps for Wallenius Wilhelmsen Ocean, a leading global provider of deep-sea ocean transportation for cars, trucks, rolling equipment and breakbulk cargo. The client had already developed some rough “subway map” visualizations for their network, noting that their current geographical maps of longer routes compressed many ports into very small areas while leaving vast swathes of empty ocean taking up the majority of […]

Project: My Boston Rapid Transit Diagram Update, 2018

Ever since I first designed it way back in 2012, I’ve tried to keep my popular alternative Boston MBTA rapid transit map updated as new stations opened and other changes to the network happened. However, with the opening of the Silver Line route to Chelsea (SL3) earlier this year, certain parts of my design just weren’t going to cut it anymore. Looking at the old version, it was also painfully obvious to me that I […]

New Project: Unofficial Map – Metro de Medellin, Colombia

While preparing today’s post about the current Medellin Metro map (2 stars), I kept looking at the map and asking myself if there were ways that I could improve upon it. Eventually, I had enough ideas to make a reworking worthwhile and set about the task. I’ve chosen to show a “near-future” version of the system, with the “M” and “P” MetroCable lines completed, but without the Line 3 BRT, as I can’t find enough information on the […]

Quick Redesign: Charlotte LYNX Blue Line Strip Map

Charlotte’s LYNX light rail opened an extension of its Blue Line today, and a few eagle-eyed correspondents were quick to alert me to the new in-car strip map, as seen in this tweet by Steve Harrison, a reporter covering the opening ceremonies. After some poking around, I also found the artwork for the map here, which gave me a clearer look at it. You can see this version of the map as the first image […]

Historical Maps, Visualizations

Here's a fun little project: an interactive timeline of Amtrak's passenger rail routes from its inauguration in 1971 through to the current day. Using the extensive Amtrak timetable archives over at the Museum of Railway Timetables (well worth a visit!), I've created maps in five year increments -- 1971, 1976, 1981, etc. -- that show the changing face of passenger rail in the United States over the last 40-plus years. I've long admired this fascinating map of the railway network in and around East Berlin, produced at the tail end of the Cold War in 1989. As is usual, I decided to redraw it in Adobe Illustrator to see what makes it tick.

Now that I’ve acquired my own large format inkjet printer, I’m printing and fulfilling all orders from my print store myself. This means it’s much easier for me to produce many of my maps in larger, made-to-order sizes for those who want them. All of my original maps are created in Adobe Illustrator, so they can scale up to any size as required. In addition, many of my restored vintage maps have excellent image resolution […]

Quick Project: Redesign of the Dallas Streetcar/DART Rail Strip Map

My Transit Maps, Unofficial Maps

The other day, long-time correspondent Edward Russell tweeted a photo of a strip map he’d seen while on the Dallas Streetcar (left). It depicts the DART light rail system, telling riders that they can make a connection with that service at Union Station (at one end of the short streetcar line). However, the execution of the map is almost comically poor: wobbly route lines, clashing labels, uneven spacing of stations and more. One of the […]

Project: Amtrak as Subway Map (revised)

One of my longest-running projects is a subway diagram-styled map of Amtrak’s passenger rail network, with the original version dating back to 2010. I always made sure to update it regularly over the years, adding and deleting stations to keep it current. In April last year, I attempted to update the design of the map as well, although I ended up trying a few too many overly-clever things with it – overlaying lines on top of […]
