Here's a fun little project: an interactive timeline of Amtrak's passenger rail routes from its inauguration in 1971 through to the current day. Using the extensive Amtrak timetable archives over at the Museum of Railway Timetables (well worth a visit!), I've created maps in five year increments -- 1971, 1976, 1981, etc. -- that show the changing face of passenger rail in the United States over the last 40-plus years. In the USA, new transit takes time. Whether it’s Environmental Impact Statements that take seven years to write, or tunnel boring machines that take longer than expected to do their work, or lawsuits from people angry that light rail might take away one of their beloved exit ramps, or mayors who want to rip up new streetcar tracks after they’ve been installed… the list goes on. And actually the system really lent itself to the map principles that seemed to work for […]

Fantasy Maps

An interesting concept that automagically generates a subway map-style timeline graphic based on the names (subway lines) and events (stations) that you input. You can even download a decent resolution PNG of your map when you’re happy with it.  The style of the map is obviously influenced by the Vignelli New York Subway diagram, and makes about as good a design as can be expected from an automated tool like this. The typography and placement […]

Note: Spoilers, sweetie! Both on the map and in my text! For those people who just have to know the order that things happen in, this is the map for you! Created by a designer at Doctor Who Online, this all looks pretty plausible to me, although I don’t lie awake at night wondering about temporal paradoxes and crossing one’s own time stream. It even includes River’s appearances in related video games and Season 6 […]
