Lovely clarity with this strip map for the Toyoko Line in Japan (the name is a portmanteau of Tokyo and Yokohama, the two cities that the line runs between). There are four route lines, each clearly showing which stations the different service types stop at. From top to bottom, these are Local, Express, Commuter Express and Limited Express. Interchanges with other lines – regardless of operating company – are also shown, and it’s bilingual as […]

Fantasy Maps

Submitted by Jimmy, who says: I had initially completed this fantasy map of the rapid and frequent transit networks in and around Toronto and Ottawa in early 2014, but I was a bit hesitant to ask you to review it because it is one of the first transit maps I’ve made; now that the year is over, I would appreciate a review with some possible feedback that I can implement in a possible new iteration. Submitted by Isaac Fischer, who says: The New Mexico Rail Runner has two versions of the system map. This version (a few years old; the Montaño station is now open) is my favorite – I definitely approve of Rio Metro’s design style. However, I have a few issues: first, the thin, gray lines shown in the background are bus routes. Since the train route is presented as a straight line, this makes it difficult to […]

Submitted by Ethan Osten, who says: These have started appearing on METRO trains in Minneapolis-St. Paul. I’d love to hear your opinion of them. Previously, the only maps which appeared in stations/trains were the strip maps (March 2014, 3.5 stars) you reviewed earlier this year. Transit Maps says: Unfortunately, this map seems like a bit of a backwards step from those previously featured strip maps, which were quite excellent. While I appreciate that the map […]

New Moscow Transit Map – Draft Version versus Final Version Comparison

A fascinating look at the same part of the new Art.Lebedev Studios-designed Moscow transit map – one specifically designed to show multiple modes of transportation in Moscow (all with <10 minute frequencies, I believe) instead of just the Metro. The draft version is via Jarrett Walker’s website, while the final map comes straight from the horse’s mouth at the Art.Lebedev Studios website. At first glance, they appear almost identical, but it’s the tiny little adjustments […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Jamison, who says: I don’t want to share this map as much as the concept behind it.  San Francisco’s Muni Metro light-rail system and the regional BART heavy-rail system share a subway under Market Street and the five busiest rail stations in the Bay Area. They share a subway, but side-by-side the system maps with radically different designs that don’t share anything in common besides the names of the station. There are 10 […]

Great photos of this fantastic old map, discovered in place (presumably during the Bakerloo/Northern Line station refurbishment works) and now protected in situ by some rather ugly chicken wire. Note that the loop at the western end of the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow Terminal 4 is still under construction, which had been completed by the time this version of the map (May 2013, 3 stars) came out in 1988. Jenni Sparks does her meticulously-detailed-yet-organic illustration thing with San Francisco (we’ve previously featured her great NYC map), with BART and Caltrain (really?) given strong visual prominence. Strangely, there’s not a single Muni Metro train, F Line streetcar or cable car to be seen! Via: 99percentinvisible: A beautiful, detailed, hand-drawn map of San Francisco

Submitted by favrebulle, who says: This is a proposed regional rail network for Rennes, Brittany. The map is my own work. The network revolves around a central Ring. Lines come in two types. Main lines are in bright colors, and circulate all day, every day, twice an hour. Secondary lines are in pastel colors and run during rush hours, or during special events for the Expo Arena line. Intercity and high-speed services (not detailed) are […]
