Submitted by Leo, who says: Hello! I’m a transportation planning student and longtime fan of your blog, and wanted to submit this map from the twin cities of Zlín and Otrokovice in Moravia in the Czech Republic. The cities have a long history as company towns for the Baťa shoe company and have a very different pattern of urban development than other cities in the region. The region, set in a valley, was planned reflecting […]

Submitted by Jan, who says: Hi Cameron, thanks for the amazing work you do on this site! I just noticed that one of the maps that I see the most often in real life has not been featured here (as far as I can tell): the regional train network map of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany’s northernmost state. It can be found here [PDF link]. Looking at it after perusing your site for a while, it is easy […]

Official Map: TER Fluo Grand Est, 2022

Having looked at a highly-successful isometric-style diagram yesterday, here’s one that’s nowhere near as accomplished despite sharing many of the same design elements. A major factor is that Wales has a a distinctive and recognisable shape that aids in locating major towns, while the Grand Est region is very indistinct and blobby. The simplified shape used on the diagram isn’t actually much like the real world, so it’s not that useful for locating places. Highlighting […]

Submitted by James, who says: Hello there! The last time you reviewed a map of mine was in 2015 [See review here – Cam]. Since then I’ve moved houses, had several new jobs, and been through a pandemic. I’ve recently been reworking a map of the Welsh rail network, based on a 2:1 triangular grid, using Affinity Designer which has continued to improve. You will see there are some clear design factors in the diagram. […]

Submitted by Tubal, who says: I would want to share with you the railway diagram I made of the Asturias Principality (Spain), in case you are interested in comment it in your blog. The main advantage of this diagram is that I take into account the whole Principality, not just its central commuter area, as all the other maps of Asturias do. In addition, I have included the new station names that Renfe is trying […]

New Official Map: A Radial Diagram for Rail Services in Cologne, 2022

I’ve had quite a few requests for this one and I’ve been meaning to write about it for quite a while, so here goes! This one’s definitely worth presenting as a before/after comparison – the new 2022 diagram above compared to the previous 2021 below: It’s no secret that I’ve been somewhat skeptical of radial diagrams in the past – seeing them as perhaps a little too flashy for their own good and often being […]

Submitted by Ze, who says: As a little mapping exercise I made a fantasy-ish strip map today of what tiered service patterns on the GO Transit Lakeshore Line could hypothetically look like after the Regional Express Rail (RER) project is finished. Some of it is fairly reasonable/already proposed/under construction, such as the East Harbour or Park Lawn stations, Eglinton Crosstown, Ontario Line, etc.; while some parts of the map are a little more far in […]

Submitted by Simon, who says: Hamburg, Germany’s line map always strikes me as one of the most ugly maps depicting a major transit network – one can understand if the ones made for small town bus networks are not up to the design standard of the upper echelons like Moscow or the like, but a city like Hamburg having such a bad map is just strange. The convoluted knot of lines around the main station […]

Submitted by Hélio, who says: I saw your already covered the Paris regional public transport map before, and I was wondering whether you had seen the very cute compact version you can see on the Vianavigo site when you zoom out. What do you think? Transit Maps says: Tiny and adorable, this diagram really only exists to say, “Hey, you’ve zoomed out too far!” Impressively though, it retains the same structure as the more detailed […]

Submitted by Tomasz, who says: Here’s the official Koleje Dolnośląskie (Lower Silesia, PL) scheme with regional railway lines. Transit Maps says: A solid, workmanlike diagram of regional rail in the region around Wrocław, Poland. Nice thick, colourful route lines with good indication of stopping patterns for the various services. The legend is comprehensive and neatly organised at the bottom of the map. The labelling is a little inconsistent, with lots of different angles and even […]
