Submitted by Milan, who says: I’m from Germany and wanted to share this map of my hometown’s streetcar/light rail system I created this week. I wanted to share it with you before my thirteenth birthday, which is tomorrow (October 12). Greetings from Potsdam. Happy birthday, Milan! It’s just about to roll over to the 12th here in Portland, Oregon, so I hope you’re having a great day!  I really like your map, which reminds me […]

Submitted by Lyle Read-Challen, who says: This is the official rail map of the West Yorkshire area, a conurbation in the north of England. Despite the name “Metro” it is really just a collection of commuter lines centred around Leeds station. It’s not particularly beautiful or interesting to look at, but it does the job. The “lines” system works better here than on many commuter systems, which tend to be all one colour. The station […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Simon, who says: Hey there! I read your blog for a while now and, being sort of interested in graphical line maps, I made my first own one. I recently moved to Oslo and I saw you already had the official one on here, and a reinterpretation. The corporate identity of Ruter, the transit authority here is already pretty nifty; the metro map sort of falls short a little on that behalf (in […]

Submitted by Piotr Ingling, who says: Not exactly a transit map but seeing your post with NY subway stations drawings recalled me this one. It’s a photo that I took in Dec 2004 – unfortunately it seems that the board has been removed long time ago during renovation works. I hope it is preserved somewhere. There are two levels here for metro and trams (underground part of tram network is called pre-metro as it’s ready […]

34th St-Hudson Yards Station Added to MTA’s “Weekender” Map

Reader Chris Bastian notes that the 7 Line’s extension to 34th Street-Hudson Yards (that opened today!) has been added to MTA’s Vignelli-style “Weekender” map. I’ll say that it looks pretty good, but Vignelli’s famous “one dot equals one stop” principle seems to have been broken at Times Sq/42nd and Grand Central/42nd, where one dot now seems to serve both the “S” and the “7″. Compare the “S” to the “L”, which has its own terminus dot at the 14th Av/8th […]

Submitted by Nicholas, who says: Please take a look at the transit map of Geneva ! It’s beautiful. It includes streetcars and all buses. Transit Maps says: Okay, Nicholas, I will!  I even know who designed this map: it’s a collaboration between designer Andrea Forgacs and architect Oscar Buson, and seems to be part of a suite of maps that include the urban core (this map), the greater suburban area, a night services map and […]

Submitted by Jakub Bobrowski, who says: This is a short film made using the QGIS and TimeManager, which presents the development process of rail public transport in Warsaw in the last 107 years. The animation shows the construction and decommissioning of tram tracks, underground, Warsaw Commuter Railway (WKD) and Fast City Rail (SKM) between 1908 and 2015. Additionally, the map showing a riverbed of the Vistula River and the changing administrative borders of Warsaw. This […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by David, who says: For some time now, I’ve been busy designing a Madrid transit map, and your blog has been a great help. It’s fantastic to have access to all this information and, first of all, I wanted to thank you for running this blog. Your comments are always helpful. Latest Madrid Metro maps were, so to speak, not very appropriate and, even without previous experience in map design – I’ve always been […]

Submitted by Michael Whalen (amongst others), who says: I just stumbled upon this map showing all CTA/Metra/SouthShore train connections in Chicago. There’s a lot going on, but I like how its much more diagrammatic than the regular map. I see several things that they’ve done with this map that I know you will hate, but I thought I’d leave it here for your critique anyway. Transit Maps says: There may be a few small things […]

Submitted by Nate, who says: In response to the Guangzhou Metro map (August 2015, 3 stars), I found this one on Wikipedia (by H2NCH2COOH), which pretty much addresses all the problems you outlined on the previous map submitted by ‘Tony’. Transit Maps says: It does, indeed! The addition of the rivers and islands of the city add some nice geographical clues to the map, and the APM inset looks much neater in its own little […]
