Submission – Historical Map: Amsterdam Tram Network, 1930 by Alain Lemaire

Submitted by Alain, who says: I have created a map of the Amsterdam tram network as it was in 1930. In this year, the network reached its greatest extent in terms of number of lines: 25. It was rather easy to find out the trajectory of each line, as there are plenty of digitised resources available online. I used another map I created last year of the current tram network as a base, and made […]

Submitted by Jaap, who says: I’m a Dutch information designer and design school teacher. I would like to submit my map of the Amsterdam Metro and Train network for your review. Transit Maps says: Jaap actually sent me a version of this map quite a while ago, and I’m sorry to say that it’s been languishing in my inbox since then. Which is a bit of a crime, because I think this is an excellent, […]

Submitted by Arjen, who says: allGo is the new name for the public transport in Almere (The Netherlands). With some rather special transit maps. Transit Maps says: Yes, these certainly are interesting, Arjen, and continue the recent trend towards more organic-looking stylised maps (see also the recent curvilinear redesign in Karlsruhe, Germany). It’s probably important to note that both of these diagrams are meant to be secondary overviews to a fully-geographical system map (PDF here), […]

Unofficial Future Map: Amsterdam Metro “Time” Diagram by Alain Lemaire

Here’s a really nicely thematic diagram of the future 2019 Amsterdam Metro, once the 52-Noord Zuid opens and the 51 gets demoted to “express tram” south of Zuid station and wil be routed around the loop to Isolatorweg instead. This is hardly the first circular Amsterdam map I’ve featured on Transit Maps (see this from way back in 2012), but I do really like the way Alain has thematically tied the whole thing together with […]

Here’s another fantastic old transit diagram taken from the pages of the 1974 Graphis Diagrams annual (see also this concept Helsinki Metro map). This minimalist diagram of Rotterdam’s transit was designed by the firm Tel Design, who were also responsible for the corporate identity of Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS or Dutch Railways) in the 1960s. The creative director, Gert Dumbar, formed his own design studio in 1977 and continued to do work for NS through the […]

Submitted by Fabian Wegewijs, Coordinator of Travel Information for U-OV, who says: In 2018 a new streetcar will run between the Central Station of Utrecht and the university area of Utrecht (De Uithof). This Uithoflijn will have 7 intermediate stops, and its termini will be the Central Station on one end and a major park + ride on the other. Twenty seven new trams have been ordered from CAF, the first of which has arrived […]

The lovely 1970 Dutch train map featured in my previous post was brought to my attention by the author of this map – a pitch-perfect recreation of the current IntercIty network in the old map’s style. Apart from a bit of welcome clean-up to the islands at bottom left (a big improvement in the clarity of the cartography here), everything else is faithfully rendered – including the odd little notch taken out of the south […]

A rather lovely minimalist diagram of Intercity trains in The Netherlands as introduced by the Spoorslag 70 plan, an effort at modernising and standardising passenger train travel in that country.  The coastline at the bottom left gets a little complex compared to the simplicity of the rest of the map, and all the type is angled (but at least all on the same axis!), but otherwise this is really quite lovely. The single thin black […]

Submitted by Alain, who says: A map of the combined metro and train network around Amsterdam, showing train services for 2017 (metro line 52 is still not operational). I made this map to show how both metro and train form an integrated network within the region. For that reason, I combined different train services when they use the same line and stop at the same stations within the region portrayed. This map might for example […]

Submitted by Fabian Wegewijs, the Coordinator of Travel Information for U-OV, who says: U-OV is the operator of public transport in Utrecht, the fourth largest city in the Netherlands. We operate a fleet of more than 300 buses and 26 trams, mostly on two radial networks. The main network goes to and from the main railway station, Utrecht Central. The second radial network goes to and from De Uithof University area. Our detailed network map […]
