Submitted by Edward Russell, who says: This is the Cape Town Metrorail map as posted in the Cape Town railway station. It’s a pretty straight forward map with the lines radiating out to the east of the CBD, though it has some complexity with lines of the same colour operating multiple courses to the same terminal: for example, the green and blue lines. Thoughts? Transit Maps says: Despite the “Metrorail” moniker, this system is really commuter […]

Submitted by beesweet624, who says: I visited Helsinki for a long weekend and it was really enjoyable. The public transportation was very reliable, on time, and went everywhere I needed to go. They have a simple metro system, a well-used tram system in the central part of the city, and numerous buses. However, I had a real problem with its commuter train map. Helsinki’s commuter train map is really confusing. Essentially the stops are arranged […]

Submitted by Milan, who says: I’m from Germany and wanted to share this map of my hometown’s streetcar/light rail system I created this week. I wanted to share it with you before my thirteenth birthday, which is tomorrow (October 12). Greetings from Potsdam. Happy birthday, Milan! It’s just about to roll over to the 12th here in Portland, Oregon, so I hope you’re having a great day!  I really like your map, which reminds me […]

Submitted by Lyle Read-Challen, who says: This is the official rail map of the West Yorkshire area, a conurbation in the north of England. Despite the name “Metro” it is really just a collection of commuter lines centred around Leeds station. It’s not particularly beautiful or interesting to look at, but it does the job. The “lines” system works better here than on many commuter systems, which tend to be all one colour. The station […]

Submitted by Kevin McElroy, who says: The Rome Metro has only had 2 lines for quite sometime. For such a famous European capital the metro system is pretty simple. Metro C is a new line opened in the southeastern portion of the city and extends out into the periphery. It is planned to eventually cross the historic center, though for now isn’t all funded. They updated the Metro map with lines, A, B, B1 (a […]

Submitted by Jakub Bobrowski, who says: This is a short film made using the QGIS and TimeManager, which presents the development process of rail public transport in Warsaw in the last 107 years. The animation shows the construction and decommissioning of tram tracks, underground, Warsaw Commuter Railway (WKD) and Fast City Rail (SKM) between 1908 and 2015. Additionally, the map showing a riverbed of the Vistula River and the changing administrative borders of Warsaw. This […]

Submitted by David, who says: For some time now, I’ve been busy designing a Madrid transit map, and your blog has been a great help. It’s fantastic to have access to all this information and, first of all, I wanted to thank you for running this blog. Your comments are always helpful. Latest Madrid Metro maps were, so to speak, not very appropriate and, even without previous experience in map design – I’ve always been […]

Submitted by Michael Whalen (amongst others), who says: I just stumbled upon this map showing all CTA/Metra/SouthShore train connections in Chicago. There’s a lot going on, but I like how its much more diagrammatic than the regular map. I see several things that they’ve done with this map that I know you will hate, but I thought I’d leave it here for your critique anyway. Transit Maps says: There may be a few small things […]

Unofficial Maps

Following on from yesterday’s post, here’s the better unofficial map of Bologna’s under-construction SFM rail network, created by user “Friedrichstrasse” on the Wikimedia Commons.  Unlike the official map, this one has firmly decided to be a diagram, and the clarity is greatly increased because of it. However, it also shows less information than the official one – no indication of bus interchanges or longer-distance regional or high-speed trains here – so it’s not a like-for-like comparison […]

Submitted by Kevin McElroy, who says: I was recently reading the Wikipedia article about the Servizio Ferroviario Metropolitano (Metropolitan Railway Service) for Bologna, Italy and a user-uploaded map of the system is drastically better than the official map. You should check it out and see if you might want to do a map review on it. The strange thing is that the logo and branding for the service is actually a pleasant design but the […]
