Unofficial Maps

Submitted by Simon, who says: Hey there! I read your blog for a while now and, being sort of interested in graphical line maps, I made my first own one. I recently moved to Oslo and I saw you already had the official one on here, and a reinterpretation. The corporate identity of Ruter, the transit authority here is already pretty nifty; the metro map sort of falls short a little on that behalf (in […]

Submitted by Steve Collins. This lovely hand-painted Tube map is just a small part of an impressive installation at the designjunction exhibition in London. Artist Camilla Barnard, in conjunction with TfL, has built an entire Tube Station replica out of wood, including ticket machines and barriers, a newspaper stand and both eastbound and westbound stations. Fun! Source: Creative Review – link no longer active.

“Light Rail” – A Real-Time Boston ‘T’ LED Map by Ian Reynolds

My Transit Maps, Unofficial Maps, Visualizations

Taking transit map wall art to the next level is this piece by Ian Reynolds, an electrical engineer and computer science student at MIT. Not only does it light up and look cool, but it actually queries the MBTA API to show the real-time position of trains on the system. Very awesome. As Ian himself describes it over on Reddit, “The MBTA is a big part of life in Boston, and I built this as sort […]

Unofficial Maps: Axonometric Projections of NY Subay Stations by Candy Chan

Unofficial Maps

I’m really liking these fantastic axonometric projections of New York Subway station complexes by architect Candy Chan.  This type of view isn’t anything revolutionary or new – see this fabulous diagram of London’s Piccadilly Circus tube station from 1929, for example – but these are all executed very deftly. The cleverly exaggerated vertical scale does a good job of preventing upper platforms and mezzanine levels from obscuring important detail below them, while the street level […]

Unofficial Maps

Submitted by David, who says: For some time now, I’ve been busy designing a Madrid transit map, and your blog has been a great help. It’s fantastic to have access to all this information and, first of all, I wanted to thank you for running this blog. Your comments are always helpful. Latest Madrid Metro maps were, so to speak, not very appropriate and, even without previous experience in map design – I’ve always been […]

Submitted by Nate, who says: In response to the Guangzhou Metro map (August 2015, 3 stars), I found this one on Wikipedia (by H2NCH2COOH), which pretty much addresses all the problems you outlined on the previous map submitted by ‘Tony’. Transit Maps says: It does, indeed! The addition of the rivers and islands of the city add some nice geographical clues to the map, and the APM inset looks much neater in its own little […]

Future Maps: Strip Maps for Los Angeles Metro Rail in 2024, by Steve Boland

Nice work here from Steve, adapting the current Metro strip maps into their future forms – with consistent letter designations for all the lines (starting to roll out now, I believe), the new Pink “L” Line designation for the proposed northern branch of the current Green Line to Aviation/96th, the new configurations of the current Blue and Gold Lines once the Regional Connector opens in 2020, and the first phase Purple “C” Line extension to […]

Unofficial Maps

Following on from yesterday’s post, here’s the better unofficial map of Bologna’s under-construction SFM rail network, created by user “Friedrichstrasse” on the Wikimedia Commons.  Unlike the official map, this one has firmly decided to be a diagram, and the clarity is greatly increased because of it. However, it also shows less information than the official one – no indication of bus interchanges or longer-distance regional or high-speed trains here – so it’s not a like-for-like comparison […]

How Should the Purple Line Appear on the Washington, DC Metro Map?

Future Maps, Unofficial Maps

It’s a great question, and one that regular Transit Maps contributor Peter Dovak addresses over at the Greater Greater Washington website. A series of maps runs through a variety of options, each with its own pros and cons. Making Lance Wyman’s chunky style work with an increasingly complex system is a real challenge, but Peter’s definitely come up with some workable ideas. The one above uses a thinner route line for the Purple Line, which […]

Submitted by Andrej Zografski, who says: Our NGO Spasi Sofia/Save Sofia, (founded and run by five forum members of the SkyScraperCity) have designed and implemented new signs for Sofia metro. It is our free gift to the society we live in and input towards a better, more organized and welcoming Bulgarian capital. Now the first test stage is being implemented, and if it is successful in September we should put the new signs in the […]
